Nha Trang – I love this place

by becca on October 17, 2009

We’re currently in Nha Trang, and man, do I love this place. The first photo in the slideshow is the view from our hotel room, which is costing us a steep $8/night. We spent the first day on the beach, relaxing in beach chairs under a big bamboo umbrella. Tough life, but someone’s got to do it. We also ate lobster right on the beach – $6.50 gets you one grilled lobster and two prawns for cracking open and enjoying on a simple tarp laid out on the sand. I admit, I feel guilty for this, it’s just too good.

Day two in Nha Trang we took a boat trip around to some of the surrounding islands. This included a trip to the aquarium where I fell in love with sea turtles. They’re such beautiful creatures. Love. Love I tell you. We did some snorkeling, ate lunch with the group on the boat, then a blur of karaoke and dancing before we jumped in the water to enjoy the “floating bar.” I don’t know what I was expecting from a floating bar in Vietnam, but it consisted of a block of styrofoam, a bouquet of fake flowers and four bottles of what the “bar tender” referred to as “fucking terrible wine.”

On the trip, we made friends with a Vietnamese couple who both served for the US – the guy as an entertainer – Nate, what did he mean by that? – and the woman, a nurse. After the war they were each given US citizenship and actually met in California. Andrew, an Australian who now works in Papa New Guinea, is the other guy in the photos. A long conversation about his many diving adventures helped us make the decision to sign up for scuba certification the next morning. As of about 30 minutes ago Nate and I are both certified open water divers:)

Hey guys, it’s Ryan from our dive trip on Monday! Lol, I took the snorkeling boat trip yesterday and it was same-same-but-same. Styrofoam “bar” with the same-same cursing bartender and the fucking terrible wine! 🙂 I just posted my first draft of my “communicating abroad” post, check it out, and I’ll try and find your gear post 🙂
